Purina CNM Heart disease (cardiac disease) is a common and serious medical condition in dogs and cats. Fortunately veterinary medicine has made a number of therapeutic advances in treating this disorder Special diets, like CNM Clinical Nutrition Management® CV-FORMULA ® can play an important role in the nutritional management of canine and feline cardiac conditions. There are two main categories of heart disease, congenital and acquired. Congenital heart defects are conditions that exist at birth. These affect a small number of dogs and cats and are usually diagnosed during a routine exam when the animal is still very young.

Acquired heart disease is much more common than congenital. It accounts for 90 percent of cardiac conditions seen in veterinary medicine. The frequency of acquired heart disease increases with age and is seen most often in animals over five years old The most common form of acquired heart disease in dogs affects the valves. In cats, conditions affecting the heart muscle (myocardium) are more common.

To determine the severity of your pet's heart condition, your veterinarian will conduct a physical examination. An electrocardiogram (ECG), radiographs (x-rays) of the chest, and blood tests may be included as part of a cardiovascular evaluation. Additional tests such as an echo cardiogram (ultras sound of the heart) may be recommended.

CNM Clinical Nutrition Management CV-FORMULA canine and feline diets are formulated as a nutritional aid in the dietary management of heart conditions.
